The sole remaining savannah area in the nation is Akagera Conservation Area, which has gained notoriety when lions were brought back into the park. It takes around two hours to go to the park; on the way, we’ll stop for a photo op. You’ll have lunch, relax in the afternoon and evening on the lodge’s balcony, which overlooks Lake Ihema, eat supper, and spend the night at Rusizi Tented Camp.

Day 3: Game drives and boat cruise along Lake Ihema

After waking up early for an early breakfast, we will head to the park for risers. There, we hope to see animals such as giraffes, buffaloes, and elephants. In the afternoon, you will head back to the lodge for lunch and take a boat ride around Lake Ihema, where you hope to see a lot of water birds and animals like crocodiles and hippos that stay overnight at Rusizi Tented Camp.

Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 4: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

After breakfast in the morning, you will set out on your journey to the home of the mountain gorillas. You arrive at the park in time for lunch, and the afternoon is spent relaxing as we await the next day’s grill trekking experience. Take your time, unwind and get ready for the hike. Dinner and accommodations at the Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel for the night.

Day 5: Gorilla Trekking Experience

Following breakfast, you’ll head to the park headquarters for an early briefing before heading into the dense forest in search of the primate species. Depending on how far the mountain gorillas have moved, the trek may take two or more hours, and you’ll be surprised by how much you can see along the trail paths. Once you meet the primates, you can spend an hour with them before returning to the lodge for dinner and an overnight stay at the Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel.

After an early breakfast, we will head to the Uwinka Visitor Centre for a briefing from park rangers. Later in the day, you will head into the forest in groups for the day’s activities. It takes two to three hours to find the special species because they like to nest in tree canopies and make loud noises, making it easier to hear them from a distance. Your guide will tell you a lot about the forest and chimpanzees in general. While you’re there, keep an eye out for other types of primates, such as blue-tailed, black and white colobus, and l’hoest, to name a few. After lunch, head back to the Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel for an afternoon canopy walk across the suspended bridges above the tree canopies, where you can observe the canopy and various bird species.
