Day 4: Chimpanzee Tracking in Nyungwe Forest National Park

Take part in a tracking adventure with chimpanzees early this morning. Nyungwe is a great spot to see chimpanzees in their natural habitat because it is home to one of the few remaining complete chimpanzee populations in East Africa. The primates can be thrilling to see playing freely in the wild because they are most active in the morning. In addition, the park is home to around a dozen other species of primates and over 300 species of birds, sixteen of which are endemic. Take a tour of a nearby tea plantation this afternoon and meet some of the local farmers there. Walking under the canopy in Nyungwe Forest National Park is another option.

Day 5: Kibuye – Kayaking on Lake Kivu

Take a picturesque journey to Kibuye, where you will arrive at your opulent boutique lodge, a tranquil haven situated on the banks of Lake Kivu. Take a tranquil kayaking trip around Lake Kivu this afternoon with a knowledgeable and experienced guide. As you paddle across the lake, take in the breathtaking surroundings. As you make your way back to your lodge at dusk, keep an eye out for fishermen in their exquisitely designed and distinctive boats as they leave for night fishing. Enjoy dinner on location later.

Day 6: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Proceed to Volcanoes National Park by land after having breakfast at your hotel. Savour a leisurely early afternoon while lounging at your opulent lodge and taking in the stunning view of a massive volcanic massif that includes three dormant and six active volcanoes. About half of the world’s wild mountain gorilla population, or about 400 individuals, call the park home. It also provided the foundation for the groundbreaking research done by primatologist Dian Fossey, who is represented in the moving book and film Gorillas in the Mist.

Later, take a guided canoe excursion along the Mukungwa River, which flows softly through the foothills of the Virunga Volcanoes, and unwind and cool off. Admire striking vistas of the towering volcanic cones in the distance, observe a variety of birds, keep an eye out for otters, and interact with amiable locals as you travel. As the trip comes to an end, pull up on a bank and enjoy a cool sundowner while holding your favourite beverage and watching the sun set over the gorgeous peaks.
