Our 5 Days Gorillas & Golden Monkeys Tracking Tour will take you to the Volcanoes National Park in the northern part of the country, home to mountain gorillas and golden monkeys. The park contains five of the volcanic mountains that make up the eight series of the great Virunga volcanic region. The primates live in the forest, unencumbered, in the bamboo forest region and along the mountain slopes. Although the IUCN redlist lists these beautiful creatures as critically endangered, the population of primate has increased thanks to the Rwandan government’s supportive measures.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival at Kigali International Airport
When you arrive, a representative from our company will meet and greet you, transfer you to your reserved lodging, and let you rest before starting your city tour. We will visit the Rwanda Museum, which houses ancient historical artefacts belonging to the Rwandan people, and tour the Kigali Genocide Memorial, where thousands of people lost their lives in the 1994 genocide and where preserved skulls of men, women, and children, as well as names and personal belongings of the victims, are on display. We will also visit the local market and sample fresh local produce before returning for dinner and spending the night at the Hôtel des Mille Collines.
Meal Plan: Dinner.
Day 2: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
You will eat breakfast in the morning and then make the 2-hour trip to Volcanoes National Park, which has a breathtaking display of rolling mountains as a backdrop. The Iby’iwacu community, who are believed to have started out as poachers but eventually learned to appreciate tourism, will provide you with a queenly and kingly treat when you visit Rwanda. They showcase the culture through traditional songs, drumming and dances, and guests can choose to participate in the dancing. We will arrive in time to check into the lodge and enjoy an afternoon of entertainment before returning for dinner and spending the night at Mountain Gorilla View Lodge.
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.
Day 3: Gorilla Trekking Experience
After eating breakfast in the morning, you will proceed to the park headquarters, which serves as the starting point for an incredible African adventure. Here, hikers will receive a briefing before venturing into the forest, where each gorilla family which can have up to 20 members is tracked in groups of eight. It may take all day to locate the habituated gorillas, depending on how far they have migrated. The stroll through the woodland is a beautiful one. Be mindful of other primates. You might be fortunate enough to spot some unusual park inhabitants on a good day. Spending an hour with the primates is permitted. Return for dinner and staying overnight at Mountain Gorilla View Lodge.
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.
Day 4: Golden Monkey Tracking Experience
You will reassemble at the park headquarters this time for the golden monkey adventure, after a delectable meal. Because the golden monkeys love to reside near the muddy mountainsides in the bamboo forest, the walk to the primates is less taxing. Their golden brown fur makes them incredibly attractive and striking. The upside-down noses and unique colours of the monkeys set them apart from other species. They move rather quickly, so be sure to have your camera ready if you need to capture shots. Occasionally, they tuck and roll their long tails around the bamboo. Just like the gorillas they allow an hour with the primates after which you return to meet your guide who will transfer you to the lodge for dinner and afternoon relaxation.
Day 5: Departure
You will have tea or coffee and a meal after which you will return to Kigali for your flight back home.
