We offer this luxury safari to three key elements of the enigma of East Africa in a condensed but breathtaking 10 Days Safari Tour in Tanzania: the fabled Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater, and the traditional Tarangire game grounds. Direct flights from Europe drop us off at the surprise serenity of the Arusha Coffee Lodge, and we go out on a carefully crafted safari, staying two nights in each of the three camps and lodges we’ve chosen.
Detailed Itinerary.
Day 1: Arrival – Arusha
Our company representative will meet you when you arrive in Arusha, give you an overview of the 10 Days Safari Tour in Tanzania, and take you to a hotel that has been reserved for you. Arrive, enjoy dinner, and spend the night.
Day 2: Coffee Plantation Tour
After the strain of lengthy travels, retreat to the peaceful and traditional Arusha Coffee Lodge, nestled among a plantation. Despite being only 3 degrees south of the equator, Arusha’s 4,500 feet of elevation promotes soft breezes and a profusion of flowers. So when we sit on the porch of our Plantation Suite, maybe after a leisurely swim, we’ll be surrounded by eager greenery and gazing up at gigantic Mount Meru, a 14,977-foot volcanic giant that towers beneficently over this distinctly African metropolis.
Days 3 and 4: Explore Tarangire National Park
Following a breakfast that includes some of the tastiest and freshest coffee we’ve ever had, our Safari Director will brief us before we go on a magnificently African drive to Tarangire and Tarangire Treetops, where we will spend the next two nights. Our first taste of the good life in the jungle was beyond amazing. Built around a thousand-year-old baobab, Treetops’ main lodge is just the start. The 20 renowned, meticulously built tree houses at the lodge are incredibly spacious, light-filled, and completely enchanted. They are raised for expansive views of the park.
And from the balcony of our tree house, we have a view of Tarangire’s amazingly diverse landscapes, which include rocky outcrops, rolling hills, and golden savannah liberally scattered with acacias and baobabs. Tarangire is home to roughly 2,500 elephants and almost all of the wild African characters, as well as some uncommon stars like kudu and oryx. We’ll spend a day in the bush learning about the big game and observing scores of different bird species frolicking in Tarangire’s trees. If we’re still itching to see even more amazing animals, we can do a night drive, which is always an eye-opening experience.
Days 5 and 6: Ngorongoro Crater
It’s a delightful and breathtakingly beautiful game drive from Tarangire to the Crater Highlands and the amazing Ngorongoro Crater. After passing Lake Manyara, we start climbing towards the edge of the Crater and the peaceful Ngorongoro Lodge Melia. We’ll take a full day game drive on the crater floor, where we’ll explore the 100 square miles of the caldera and hopefully spot lions, elephants, black rhinos, and other famous East African animals. Afterward, we’ll head back to the lodge for peaceful, starry-eyed sundowners on the private terraces of our cabins, followed by a delicious dinner with a view of one of the most spectacular places on earth.
Days 7 and 8: Serengeti National Park
We come to an end to this brief, but unquestionably amazing, safari in the Serengeti. Cyril Connolly remarked of the broad plain, “There is a lightening of the spirit.” We are welcomed to an uncommon, genuinely peaceful paradise. Huge and blue, the sky is as pure as the day the earth was created. Nestled among kopje-like boulders right above the Grumeti River, Migration Camp will provide us with two perfect nights of a Serengeti safari. There is a split-level lounge, a swimming pool, and a classy restaurant at the main lodge.
Each of the 20 tents in Migration Camp has a deck surrounding it, providing a private haven from which to enjoy views of the surrounding natural spectacle. Rumbling pods of hippos and numerous single-minded crocodiles descend on the Grumeti, much to the delight of those of us who find it hard to believe that these otherworldly creatures called hippos actually exist. The great migration culminates in a crossing of this river, where the crocs bide their time like the pleistocenic beasts that they are.
Days 9 and 10: Game Drives – Return to Arusha – Departure.
We’ll do one last game drive before returning to Migration Camp for breakfast. Perhaps all we need is a bit more luck to finish the list and we’ll be seeing the bit Five soon. These miniature marvels are named after their respective animals: the ant lion, buffalo weaver, rhinoceros beetle, leopard tortoise (which isn’t quite small; it can weigh as much as three regular bowling balls), and the incredibly timid elephant shrew, which isn’t much heavier than an elephant’s tear.
Either way, it’s time to bid farewell to Tanzania’s breathtaking wilderness and the Serengeti. We take off again for Arusha, unwind in the day rooms of the Arusha Coffee Lodge, maybe swim before takeoff, and board our homeward-bound aircraft in the evening.
